Axsom Martial Arts wins 54 medals at AAU Regional Championships

Axsom Martial Arts of Newport News collected a treasure trove of medals at the AAU Regional Championships, held at Hermitage High School in Henrico earlier this month.

In all, over 200 competitors competed in Kobudo (Weapons), Kata (Forms) and Kumite (Fighting) demonstrations. The Axsom team won 54 medals overall — 31 gold, 11 silver and 12 bronze.

In addition, the team captured 12 Triple Crown trophies, given to fighters who win three golds.

Axsom’s medal winners included:

Advanced Division: Black Belts (over 4 years competing): Jodi Sullivan (35-45 Division Female) first in all three categories (Kumite, Kata, Kobudo); Austin Galeski (18-34 Division Male) second in Mandatory Kata, second in Kata, third in Kumite, and first in Team Kumite. Nick Keane (17 Division Male) third in Kobudo and Kata and second in Kumite. Will Whitaker (15-16 Division Male) first in all three categories, and a Triple Crown. Ryan Sigsbee (11-12 Division Male) first in Kata and Kumite, and a Triple crown.

Intermediate Division: Brown Belts (3-4 years competing): Aemon Tucker (13-14 Division Male) third in Kobudo and Kata, first in Kumite, and Triple Crown. Jaylen Nicholson (9-10 Division Male) first in all three categories, and Triple Crown. Myna Chassard (9-10 Division Female) first in all three divisions. Preston Wilkinson (13-14 Division Male) first in Kobudo, second in Kata, and third in Kumite, plus Triple Crown.

Novice Division: Green Belts (2-3 years competing): Jose De La Lastra (11-12 Division Male) first Kobudo, second Kata, Kumite, and Triple Crown. Amyir Gordon (7-8 Division Male) first in all three categories, and Triple Crown. LJ Latham (5-6 Division Male) second in Kobudo and Kata, and first in Kumite.
