In the last three years of Eric Tillman’s life, he married his high school sweetheart, moved to a larger property that he planned to build out in retirement and took deep dives in Lake Erie looking for shipwrecks.
Tillman, 47, of Elyria, died Sunday night, after he and his wife, Cindy, were thrown from his motorcycle after crashing into a car at state Route 61 and Route 113 in Berlin Township in Erie County. Cindy Tillman, 45, was listed Monday in critical condition at Pro Medica Toledo Hospital.
A trooper from the Ohio Highway Patrol’s Sandusky post said Monday the crash is being investigated and no charges have been filed.
“They were avid riders and (Sunday) was just a beautiful day, and so they just went for a Sunday afternoon cruise and selected a country road that he and we have ridden many, many tines,” said John Tillman, Eric’s brother.
Eric Tillman was the youngest of five children. There was Michael Tillman, who died last year; Jan Grueser, John and Tom Tillman.
“My oldest brother, Michael, just passed away … he died suddenly from a heart attack so I know Eric was still getting over the loss of our oldest brother,” John Tillman said.
The siblings all graduated from Lorain High School, where John said Eric and Cindy had dated. Life took them in separate directions, but three years ago they reconnected after both were divorced.
They were married in 2014 at The Lorain Palace Theater, which had a special marquee to celebrate the occasion.
“Cindy is a wonderful person, very loving and caring,” said Eric’s daughter, Malaina Tillman. “I couldn’t ask for a better stepmom.”
