Alan Johnson posted career win No. 119 at Canandaigua Motorsports Park Saturday, and shared victory lane with Jason Barney, winner of the accompanying Empire Super Sprints main.
Dave Allen showed the way early in the Modified feature, with Johnson slicing through the field. Johnson and Matt Sheppard were mid-pack by lap 10, and Johnson was scored third with 15 laps on the board. He flawlessly picked off second and then the top spot from Dave Allen only a few laps later.
Sheppard diced with the top racers, and took second in lapped traffic. Justin Haers and Erick Rudolph were fighting in the back half of the top five when the lone slow down was handed out by Eldon Payne, who stopped on the track and was struck by Mike O’Brien. This set up a nine lap dash to the checkers; Johnson pulled away deftly while Rudolph moved to third. The order held through the finish, with Johnson leading Sheppard, Rudolph, Haers and Steve Paine at the finish.
Jason Barney was quickly closing on early leader Sam Reakes IV in the sprint main. Reakes had lapped traffic to deal with only six laps in, and that bunched the top five in a tense knot. Coming to the halfway point of the 25-lap main, Barney darted low off the fourth turn to take the lead. Chuck Hebing was battling with Dylan Swernik and Jonathan Preston in the top five. Hebing hit the wall on lap 17, giving up his position in the top five when he slipped pit side. Barney eventually had a full straightaway lead over Reakes in the green-to-checkers main; Swernik, Shawn Donath and Preston filled the top five.
Dave Marcuccilli forged the race-winning pass on lap 12 of the 25-lap sportsman feature, amassing a full straightaway lead over Kevin Ridley in the final laps. Early leader Anthony Kimble held steady for third with Nick Guererri and Austyn Fugle racing into the top five.
